DIY Night Cream, An Ayurvedic Treatment For Pigmentation – This homemade face cream is super easy to make.
Apply this on the pigmented or textured area and leave it overnight. Use everyday until you see results.
How Long Does This Face Cream Last?
You can store this night cream in the refrigerator for about 1 week.
To be honest, i haven’t stored this for more than 1.5 weeks as it always gets over by then. Still, i would not recommend using any homemade preservative free product for more than 2 weeks.
In this special case, the Aloe Vera gel does contain safe preservatives like sodium benzoate which helps lengthen the self life of the product.
These ingredients are highly beneficial in repairing the skin and have the following benefits,
- Blocks melanin pigment and reduces pigmentation
- Lightens and brightens skin complexion
- Fades acne scars, dark spots and evens out your complexion
- Heals textured, rough, bumpy or inflamed skin to reveal a smoother looking skin
- Antioxidants delays the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also, protects the skin.
- Balances oil production and thus, prevents acne
Reason For Pigmentation On Face
The colour of our skin depends on the pigment called ‘Melanin’. If there is an increase in the Melanin levels in a particular area, it may appear darker than the surrounding skin which is what we know as Hyper pigmentation.
Hyper pigmentation is generally appears around the mouth, neck or in patches.
The first thing you need to do to avoid skin discolouration and uneven skin tone is to use SUNSCREEN.
Sunscreen protects the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun which causes sun tan, freckles, hyper-pigmentation, uneven skin tone and accelerates the ageing process.
What Causes Hyper-pigmentation?
- Sun Exposure (use sunscreen)
- Hormonal imbalances (Get treatment and the pigmentation may fade away naturally)
- Certain medications
In some cases, hyper-pigmented patches may appear as a birth mark. These are difficult to treat with home remedies as the problem lies deep within the layers of the skin.

Texture And Consistency
The texture should be gel like so adjust the amount of Aloe Vera gel your use to get the desired consistency.
My strainer is not really fine meshed so you can see that some of the particles did get through. As i said earlier, it does not really bruise your skin.
This gel does blend in easily.
This homemade cream does helps moisturise but it may not be enough for dry skin so add a few drops of Glycerine or your favourite oil to this.
The face cream does get absorbed completely.
As i did not add any oils to this cream, the finish remains matte.
Ayurvedic Treatment Cream Recipe
If you are using the raw form of Licorice and Manjistha, you do not need to filter the decoction.
- Water – 1 Cup
- Licorice powder – 1 Tablespoon
- manjistha powder – 2 Teaspoons
- Aloe Vera Gel – As required
Options – Add 3-4 drops essential oils/Carrier oils for extra hydration.
For this recipe, you have to use store bought Aloe Vera Gel.
It helps eliminate the process of adding thickeners and preservatives while making the night cream. This also makes the whole process a lot simpler and also, saves time and effort.
How To Make The Night Cream
There are two main steps you need to follow to make this night cream which is an easier method of ayurvedic treatment for pigmentation on face.
- Mix liquorice and Manjistha in one glass of water without forming lumps.
- Now, Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Reduce the flame and let it cook until there is around 4-5 tablespoons of liquid left.
- Let it cool completely.
- Filter the liquid.
- Add the Liquorice – Manjistha decoction to 2 Tablespoon of Aloe Vera gel.
- You may add more Aloe gel if required.
- Bring it to a gel consistency.
- If you prefer, Add essential oils or carrier oils to this face cream
Make just enough for 1 week.
Freeze the left over serum and use it to make a new batch.
To be honest, it is easier to make this serum if you use the raw form of these herbs. It certainly does make the filtering easier and you get a much better consistency without the grainy texture.
The recipe works no matter which form of the herbs you use.
If you use powders, then there is a fair chance that the fine granules may pass through the filter an give a grainy texture to the end product.
Although the gel may not be that smooth, the granules are not big enough to scratch your skin or cause any kind of irritation. It worked superbly well on my sensitive skin.
This ayurvedic treatment for pigmentation does smoothen out textured skin and soothes redness and rashes from razor burn. It does brighten and lighten the skin pigmentation but, it did take around two weeks to start showing results.
On consistent use, this face cream did lighten the pigmentation around the mouth area.
I use ACV toner and oats face pack along with this face cream both of which i will be sharing in the upcoming weeks.
DECOCTION TREATMENT (Recipe Given Above)
Use the decoction alone on the pigmented area and leave it for at least five hours or even better if you could leave it overnight.
It did not cause any negative reaction on my sensitive skin so i am guessing, it should be fine to use for all skin types.
Keep in mind that, the decoction is much stronger and concentrated which means it works faster and shows results in a week’s time BUT, this decoction did leave a mild red stain on my face. 🙁
I continued to use the decoction for about a week disregarding the red stain until i got rid of the textured skin. Once i stopped using it, the stain also started to fade away.
Trust me, The stain is by no means permanent. It will go away on its own. 🙂
