Blue Lizard Sunscreen Face Review And Swatches

blue lizard mineral sunscreen review

Hope you all are staying safe during this lock down. Today i will be reviewing a sunscreen which is ‘ Blue Lizard Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30+’ Review And Swatches for you guys.

I bought this mineral sunscreen about one and a half year ago. Those who follow my blog would know that i am a sucker for chemical free sunscreen. As i have sensitive skin, my skin has an allergy to fragrance and certain chemicals. Hence it breaks out easily.

I had already reviewed other chemical free mineral sunscreens like Aveeno Mineral Sunscreen Spf 50 and Z- Block Sunscreen, neither of them are perfect. So i continue searching for the perfect holy grail sunscreen for my skin.

Without unnecessary chitchat, let us get in to the review of Blue Lizard Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30+.

How To Use

Shake well prior to use.
Apply liberally to dry skin 15 minutes before sun exposure.

My Experience

Skin Type – Normal Sensitive

Blue lizard mineral based face sunscreen has both physical sunscreen(Zinc Oxide) and chemical sunscreen(Octinoxate, also called Octyl methoxycinnamate) in it. This was not mentioned in the amazon page and i ended up buying this sunscreen by mistake.

Other Variants

If you are going to buy a mineral sunscreen from Blue Lizard, choose any variant except this one, that is ‘Face‘ and the’ Sport original‘ as these two contains chemical sunscreens in them.

Octinoxate(Octyl methoxycinnamate) is a known hormone disruptor (Affects estrogen) but up to six percent is considered safe though.

Consistency

The consistency is similar to Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock.  It is neither too thick not thin. It takes longer to blend in so you have to keep rubbing unlike chemical sunscreens. But all the mineral sunscreens i have tried are like that. So i just have to get used to it.

Fragrance

Blue lizard mineral sunscreen is fragrance free but it does have a mild chemical smell to it. It is not as strong as my Aveeno mineral sunscreen though.

Blend-ability

It takes a minute to get completely absorbed in to the skin. You have to keep rubbing it in.

Finish

The finish is shiny but it does settle to a matte if i just leave it alone for an hour or so. I do not know how it would fare on oily skin. No matter which skin type you are, it is better to apply a moisturiser underneath this sunscreen.

The finish is certainly not greasy or sticky at all, just shiny.

But when i applied this on my hands, it got absorbed really quick without leaving any residue behind. As you can see below, it settles to a complete matte finish and also brightens up the skin a bit. The brightening effect fades after an hour though.

As A Moisturiser

My face feels soft and smooth when i touch but, my skin feels stretchy and tight. Although it contains ‘Hyaluronic acid’ and ‘Green tea extracts’, the Blue lizard mineral sunscreen does not moisturise my Normal skin. 🙁

Depending on this product alone for moisturising your skin may not be a good idea for dry or mature skin as this sunscreen may accentuate wrinkles, flaky skin and dry patches. It may also make pores look visible.

Use a good face moisturiser that suits your skin type before applying this sunscreen.

Light weight Or Heavy

As a stand alone product, This does feel slightly heavy on my normal skin. It is like there is a film covering my skin. But once i apply it over a moisturiser, it feels much much better.

I get the same feeling when i apply Vaseline on my lips. Like something is sitting there and i am conscious of it.

Sun Protection

It does protect my skin from tanning for 1.5-2 hours after which i have to reapply. I do not like sunscreens that offer sun protection for less than 4 hours though.

White Cast

There is a slight white cast which settles after 3-5 minutes. It does not fade away completely. But, it does not make my face look weird either.

This sunscreen will suit fair-medium skin tones.

Water/Sweat Proof

This is not waterproof or water resistant.

Pros

  • Contains Hyaluronic Acid and Antioxidants Green Tea, Caffeine and Vitamin E
  • Prevents sun tan
  • Protects my skin for two hours
  • White cast fades quickly
  • Gets absorbed completely
  • Did not cause breakouts
  • Non greasy
  • Shiny finish on face
  • Matte finish on my hands
  • Does not clog pores
  • Paraben and fragrance free

Cons

  • Heavy on my normal skin
  • Not sweat or water resistant
  • May accentuate dry patches when applied without a moisturiser
  • It does not moisturise well and hence the skin feels tight

**It is not completely chemical free. But i won’t hold that against them as, it was my fault for not noticing that before buying.

Will I Recommend Blue lizard mineral sunscreen?

As i indicated earlier, If you are going to buy a chemical free sunscreen from Blue Lizard, choose any variant except  ‘Face‘ and the’ Sport original‘ as these two contains chemical sunscreens in them.

“Blue Lizard Mineral sunscreen Sensitive Face” might be the best among all the others as it is chemical free and has moisturising plus antioxidants in them. Note that this variant is not water or sweat resistant.

Rating – 3/5

That concludes my Blue lizard sunscreen review. I will be back with another product review next week.

Until Then,

Stay Indoors Stay Safe.
