There are two methods of making rice water. They are,
- Instant rice water
- Fermented rice water
So, Which one is better?
Fermented rice water has more benefits when compared to plain rice water. It takes time but is totally worth it.
Both these recipes provide anti-fungal and antimicrobial benefits.
Why you ask?
It is because of the presence of zinc and selenium. 🙂
We will get in to these in a bit.
Remember, Fermented rice water must be diluted before use.

How To Make Plain Rice Water?
Take half cup of rice in a bowl
Wash it properly to remove dust and dirt
Now add the rice to a cup of water in a pot and bring it to boil. I usually leave it for five minutes.
Strain the starchy liquid and let it cool before use.
You may refrigerate rice water up to a week.
How To Use
You do not have to dilute plain rice water.
Shampoo your hair like usual and rinse. Pour the rice water over damp hair and massage with your fingers. Let it sit for about 5-20 minutes before you wash off.
How To Make Fermented Rice Water?
Take half cup of rice in a bowl and rinse it thoroughly.
Add one cup of water to it
Place a lid on top of it. Keep stirring every 5-10 minutes.
Here you have two choices which are,
Drain the liquid after 30 minutes and place it in a warm place until it ferments. It could take anywhere between 24-48 hours.
Leave the rice in the water itself until it ferments that is, for about 24-48 hours. This ensures faster fermentation. This is the method that i always use. 🙂
The below fermented rice water is made from brown rice. This is from my previous batch.
How To Use
When you are using fermented rice water, you have to dilute it as it might be too potent to use it as it is.
Add one cup of water to half cup of fermented rice water before use. Follow 1:2 ratio while diluting.
Let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing it off.
